Un-journalistic journalism

The serious Middle East events from this month have proven once again that humans can be very violent and very unreasonable. The media's coverage of the conflict between Israel and Lebanon has been very interesting. As a kid growing up I always imagined the media as a fair and impartial entity. Now I have a completely different view. The media as a whole (in all countries), now tends to play the role of a cheerleader and dumbs down the news so that folks don't have to think much. As a youth I expected this from other countries. Now I see that our country, the US, is also guilty of this behavior. If both sides of the conflict are committing atrocities then they both have to be covered in an equal fashion.

The point I'm trying to make is that it is vital for the health of our democracy that we receive the full truth regarding all matters. Censoring or partially hiding crucial information regarding serious global conflicts puts us in danger of shaping opinions based on that same faulty information. I urge everyone to always refer to multiple sources when trying to shape an opinion on a matter. It's the most common practice of critical thinking.

Some futbol and some reality

I just finished watching the World Cup soccer match between Mexico and Argentina. All I can say is wow. That was the best match of the cup so far. I was definitely disappointed that Mexico lost. There is lots to be proud about. Now come some serious changes for the Mexico's soccer program. The coach did not come through on his promise to take the team farther than before.

On a more serious note... I have noticed that the media has rapidly been creating a campaign against immigrants. Seems like everyday there is a front page story about immigrants being responsible for just about everything you can imagine. Hmmmm.... Sounds like definite scapegoating to me. More than that, it now appears that politicians are making it a practice to use immigrants as scapegoats when their political image is falling on the weak side. Stay tuned for more info.... I'm out.
